NFTs have rapidly emerged as a tool for artists and musicians to exhibit, promote, sell and support their work, but with this infrastructure comes risks, implications, and barriers to entry which serve as gatekeepers. If the technology cannot diffuse into communities outside of those which are traditionally privileged, what purpose does it serve?
This discussion seeks to address these barriers and break down elements of the technology as they apply to specifically to music communities, as a means of promoting accessibility and encouraging further questions, interrogation and exploration.

Avatars have long been used as a means of expression, from chat room display pictures to modular RPG characters. In the face of a global pandemic this expression has expanded, crossing borders and creating shared space which have otherwise been severely restricted. How can these freedoms propose new support structures and economic models for a music industry in disrepair?
Approaching this question from an interdisciplinary perspective, this discussion seeks to understand the scope of avatar technology as both art form and interstitial tool supporting expression and sustenance.
